Quarterback Trent Edwards Meets Terrell Owens – Our Hearts Go Out To You

Quarterback Trent Edwards is saying all the right things, but you know he’s ready to throw up. The worst team-killer in the NFL has come to destroy a young quarterback in only his second season as a starter, behind a terrible offensive line, on a team that has almost no chance of doing anything again this year. Let’s face it – Terrell Owens doesn’t want to be in Buffalo. Trent Edwards doesn’t want Terrell in Buffalo. Dick Jauron, the Buffalo Bills head coach, doesn’t want Terrell. But you can be certain of one thing – this is going to be the best one-season investment the Buffalo Bills have ever made – not from a “quality of team” perspective, but from purely a business investment.

Buffalo Bills Front Office Not Committed To Winning Football Games

Trent Edwards will be thrown to the “wolf in Terrell Owens clothing” in 2009

The Buffalo Bills haven’t been truly committed to putting a winning football team on the field in a decade. The 90 year old team owner Ralph WIlson is simply riding out his final years, and has clearly taken the approach that gimmicks are better business than putting a winning team on the field. Evidence? Until Terrell Owens, the Bills haven’t picked up any really big name players in many years. We have gone through four coaches in the past decade or so, and only Greg Williams had any promise of being a legitimate head coach in the NFL. All of them came cheap. We don’t pay for good players, we don’t pay for good coaches, we don’t trade up to draft higher, and we’ve started “whoring-out” our football team to Toronto, Canada for tens of millions of dollars. So instead of playing our arch-rivals the Miami Dolphins at home, outside, in the wintertime in Buffalo in December, we played them in the Dome in Toronto, Canada. The city of Toronto has basically leased the Buffalo Bills to play games in Toronto for the next several years. So the Bills franchise is making a fortune on the move, which is a good thing, because we’re losing a fortune in ticket sales by not making the playoffs in a decade.

2009-2010 will likely be no different for Trent Edwards and the Bills. There is very little chance of making the playoffs, so the only way to keep the fans coming out was to come up with another gimmick. We introduce to you, in the Red, White, and Blue of the Buffalo Bills, Terrell Owens. All of the fans in Buffalo pretty much feel the same – we’re sick, we know exactly why they’ve made this move, and we can’t wait to see that grown man cry again when he doesn’t get the ball every play. But make no mistake about it – we will be watching our crappy team again this year – every damn minute of every game. The stadium will sell out, the jerseys will sell out, and the beer in the stadium will sell out – exactly the same way that our once beloved owner has now sold-out his fans.

Shame on you Ralph Wilson

A lot of local sportswriters are billing this as a move out of “desperation to win right now”. Really? I don’t believe that at all! I believe it’s out of desperation to draw revenues right now, but not to win. He’s some simple facts from an ESPN sports blog

“…without [Jerry] Rice, Owens has hardly won a thing. During the past seven seasons, Owens has been in uniform for just one postseason victory. His lifetime playoff record is 4-7 — and of those four wins, three came in the wild-card round. And in four of his past six postseason games — the biggest games of his career — this alleged superstar had 49 or fewer receiving yards. His total postseason record without Rice is 1-5. Since leaving San Francisco, Owens has not won a playoff game.”

Yeah, Trent Edwards and the Buffalo Bills would love to win right now. But the promising young quarterback has been thrown to the wolves instead. His offensive line was terrible in 2008, with our best offensive lineman Jason Peters holding out through training camp. He came in looking terrible, and made the pro-bowl purely on his name. His selection was a total joke – watch the films. I wasn’t screaming “What are ya doin, Peters????” at the screen every other play for my health! Even Ross Tucker said in one of his blogs:

“Though I’m quite sure some of my personal opinions regarding players that didn’t deserve to get in (I’m talking to you, Jason Peters)…..- Ross Tucker

….and I totally agree. Peters and the offensive line were terrible. We picked up a center in the offseason, but we’ll see how that pans out.

So if anyone has any evidence that Terrell Owens is here to make Trent Edwards a better quarterback and the Buffalo Bills a better team, I’d love to hear it. But nobody is going to debate the fact that Owens is going to make a mess of things, and Trent Edwards, in his second year as a starter, is going to have his face full of defensive lineman on the field, and a face full of Terrell Owens in the press.

Lucky us in Buffalo. Lucky Edwards. Goodbye Dick Jauron after 2009. You were a nice guy. Try smiling sometimes.
