Pictured here are Tim Tebow of the Florida Gators, Colt McCoy of the Texas Longhorns, and Sam Bradford of the Oklahoma Sooners. These three quarterbacks are slated to be the premier gunslingers of 2009, but you know there will be others that rise up to steal some of the spotlight before the 2009 season is out. Who will win the Heisman? Who will play for their conference championship? For these three NCAA hometown heroes, nothing will satisfy any of them short of the National Championship – and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Quarterback Tim Tebow is one of the most talked about college football quarterbacks in the land, and for good reason. Tebow has been nothing but stellar in leading the Florida Gators to the top of the SEC, to the National Championship, and has ammassed every record, trophy, and title you could possibly win along the way. He has been innovative, with his “jump pass” being a fantastically effective creation, he’s been a tremendous running quarterback, an accurate and strong-armed passing quarterback, a tremendous team leader, and has impeccable character. His unusual upbrining by missionary parents and being homeschooled in order to instill his parent’s values in him, Tim Tebow has turned out to be one of the most amazing athletes and characters the world of college football has ever seen.
Tim Tebow and the World’s Expectations
Quarterback Tim Tebow will have the weight of the world on his shoulders as he tries to lead the Florida Gators to another National Championship
Let’s face it – everybody is expecting nothing short of an SEC title, a national championship, and the Heisman trophy for Quarterback Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators this year. Anything less than that will be considered underperforming. Tebow knew this full well when he announced returning to Florida for his senior season, but has stated:
“The reason that I did come back wasn’t to win another championship — which we’re trying to do,” Tebow said. “It wasn’t to try to go higher in the [NFL] draft or anything like that. It was to have an impact on today’s youth — something that most athletes don’t ever take the time to think about.”
If anyone else had said that it would likely be hard to believe – but not this guy. Of course if they don’t win the SEC title and the National Championship, you can be sure that he’ll be leaning heavily on his faith to maintain his confidence, because he’s going to get ripped by every sportswriter and blogger in the nation.
Can Tim Tebow Really Be That Genuine?
I’ll be honest with ya – some of the “pushing the religion” and “God bless everyone” is not what I always feel like hearing. I truly admire and respect Tim as an athlete and as a human being, but it all gets to be a bit much at times. But For Tebow, that’s the point – to enjoy playing football, to get the word out, and to help and inspire people. Well, he’s certainly doing just that. And shame on me for being slightly annoyed at times with it all – because I get way more than slightly annoyed with hateful, arrogant, low-class jerks like Terrelle Pryor of the Ohio State Buckeyes who I wrote about in a recent blog called Terrelle Pryor: The Only Quarterback The Buckeyes Really Have. The hate and discord that “people” like Pryor cause far outweighs the benefits and enjoyment that comes from watching a great athlete.
But even Jody, a blogger from Alabama who describes himself as “a Christian … serving as the Associate Minister to Students at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church”, had said in a pretty funny and interesting blog in reference to Tim Tebow wearing “John 3:16″ under his eyes in the National Championship game:
While watching this year’s BCS National Championship game, I even was critical of Tim Tebow for wearing it under his eyes … I think my comment was, “How Cliche!” I know, I’m a “hater”. I guess I’m glad he didn’t take it a step further…”
But as Jody and I know full well, Tim Tebow is the real deal and we all admire and respect him as a person and as an athlete. The resentment more than likely stems from wishing we could see ourselves in as good a light as TV presents Tebow in.
Will Tebow Play Quarterback In The NFL?
There’s a lot of talk about whether or not Tebow will be an NFL quarterback, or whether they’ll move him to running back or maybe tight end. Tim loves playing quarterback and I’m sure he’ll get his chance to prove to the NFL crowd that he is worthy of being behind center. It’s kind of the same scenario that Pat White, formerly of the West Virginia Mountaineers is going through in the 2009 NFL draft.
But Tebow seems to have the skills to play quarterback at the NFL level, and I’m sure that Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators will be trying to prove that to the scouts as the they make their run for yet another National Championship in the 2009-2010 college football season.
