NCAA Quarterbacks 2009: The Top Three Part II - Sam Bradford

College Football’s Top 3 Quarterbacks

Pictured here are Tim Tebow of the Florida Gators, Colt McCoy of the Texas Longhorns, and Sam Bradford of the Oklahoma Sooners. These three quarterbacks are slated to be the premier gunslingers of 2009, but you know there will be others that rise up to steal some of the spotlight before the 2009 season is out. Who will win the Heisman? Who will play for their conference championship? For these three NCAA hometown heroes, nothing will satisfy any of them short of the National Championship – and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

From David to Goliath

Quarterback Sam Bradford was not highly recruited out of high school. Bradford was rated a 3-star prospect and was overshadowed by many of the high-powered recruits in his class. But I’ll bet ya anything he didn’t mind that a bit. As a red-shirt freshman he won the starting position and never looked back. It’s rumored that he reads the story “David and Goliath” before every game – but I’ve got news for Sam Bradford – he’s not David anymore – and everyone he faces will be reading that same book before gametime.

Sam Bradford – Oklahoma’s Goliath

I normally refrain from posting many stats – the world has plenty of them – but I can’t help but post some highlights from Bradford’s Heisman winning sophomore season because it just doesn’t seem possible that some of these could be real!

  • Bradford averages 14.78 yards/comp. That’s 2+ yards more than any of the top five passers in the nation
  • No. 1 nationally with 48 touchdown passes despite ranking No. 8 in pass attempts and threw only 8 interceptions
  • No. 3 nationally in passing yards despite throwing 126 fewer passes than No. 2 and 114 fewer than No. 1
  • No. 1 nationally in passing efficiency
  • Ranks No. 4 nationally in total offense despite OU averaging 43.1 rushes and 205.5 rushing yards per game
  • Passing efficiency rating of 180.86!

Sam Bradford will be shooting for the Big12 Championship and the National Championship in 2009-2010

My God those are ridiculous stats! Insane! So it’s well known that Sam Bradford is one of the most amazing gunslingers around. And without a doubt the Oklahoma Sooners will be playing the Texas Longhorns for the BIG12 Championship this year – and both teams will throw for 600 yards each. And the final score will end up 48-45 – but don’t ask me who’s going to win. How should I know? They haven’t even played the game yet! My God some people have no patience!

Don’t Mention Oklahoma Quarterbacks and the NFL

Sam Bradford skipped his chance at the NFL to stay in Oklahoma and avenge the national title loss to Florida in the 2008 BCS Championship game. And it’s a good thing he did. First of all, he’s not ready for the NFL. It’s easy to argue that almost no college quarterbacks are ever ready for the NFL, and for the most part that is true. But Oklahoma doesn’t have much of a history when it comes to NFL quarterbacking success. Troy Aikman is the only one that has done well in the NFL in the past 25 years. Of course, the ole’ wishbone offense didn’t exactly prepare Sooner quarterbacks for reading NFL defenses and perfecting their passing skills.

But Bradford is looking to improve his skills and expand on the terrific numbers he put up in 2008. I read one blog that quoted Sam Bradford as saying:

“There’s still a lot of things I feel I can do better, even if my numbers aren’t as good,” Bradford said. “I can be a much better quarterback in all phases of the game. Just defensive recognition, you can always become quicker at knowing what they’re doing, seeing the smaller details that might tip what they’re going to do. There’s always things looking at a defense that you can get better at.” – Sam Bradford

I don’t know what Bradford could improve on that would make his numbers any better. And as far as the Oklahoma Sooners in 2009-2010, there’s only one game that he can improve upon that would make their season any better than last years, and that’s the BCS Championship game – one they’ll likely see again this year.

So this time next year we’ll all be debating who the Detroit Lions will be taking as the first overall draft pick in the 2010 NFL draft, and Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford will all be in contention. But for now, who cares? This season in college football is one I’m looking forward to as much as any I can ever remember, and the BIG12 championship game is going to be a barn burner! Will Bradford do it again? Will Colt McCoy beat his ass? God I can’t wait! Hang on to your seat, folks – it’s gonna be big!
