The three quarterbacks that are projected for the first round in the 2009 NFL draft are:
Many are still picking the Detroit Lions to pick Stafford as the first overall draft pick in the draft. How do you spell disaster? It would be a tragedy if they did this. I mean, the 2010 NFL draft will be loaded with quarterbacks! So why would you take one of these three quarterbacks with your first pick when you need pretty much everybody everywhere? There are a ton of sure bets in the 2009 NFL draft. Pick a sure winner with this year’s picks, go with Daunte Culpepper for this year, and then draft one of the super-hero quarterbacks that are coming out in the 2010 NFL draft.

One guy that’s on the list of prospects this year at the quarterback position is Nate Davis of Ball State. It’s an interesting story because this past season he completed 67.3% of his passes for 3,095 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, good for sixth in the nation in passing efficiency. He lead his team to a 12-0 regular season and finished the regular season ranked 12th in the nation. However, he ended the season with nothing short of a travesty – a disasterous MAC Championship game with four turnovers against the Buffalo Bulls and a blowout loss 45-13 in the GMAC bowl.
Nate comes out as a junior just like the other three quarterbacks. Why? I think for the same reason that the others came out early – they didn’t want to go undrafted next year when competing against the likes of Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Graham Harrell, and Tim Tebow – all of which are going to be drafted in the 2010 NFL draft. The end to Davis’ season has seriously hurt his draft prospects and even a great NFL combine can not recoup the damage. You simply can not lose the conference championship and get blown out in the bowl game a few months before going into the NFL – I don’t care what you did before that.
The pressure in the NFL is enormous and the bottom line is that you must be able to perform when it’s all on the line. If you don’t, the fans and the media will come down on you like a boulder falling off a cllff on Wiley E. Coyote. The NFL scouts are going to recognize the accomplishments and potential Nate has, but to see him completely fall apart when it mattered most will be quite disturbing.
